Double Booked

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

I heard that lots of people have booked holidays abroad this summer, plus a back up plan of a holiday in this country too due to the travel traffic light system with Covid. 'How ridiculous', I thought as surely it is best to look forward to just one holiday that you can definitely count on in this country. I like to err on the side of caution, in case you hadn't noitced, so I want to wait until completely safe - or as safe as can be - before I book to travel overseas again.

I got stung for being so smug when I did the same thing myself but by booking two holidays over the same week in Bath - not on purpose I might add, but by accident. I tried to book a hotel online but the swirly thing just kept twirling around so I left it for a few hours to brew. On my return to my laptop, it was still going around, so I closed it down, checked my emails for confirmation and nothing had gone through. I gave up on that option and ended up booking and paying for somewhere else instead.

Imagine my horror when a week later, my husband and I were going through our bank statement and the amount for the first attempt hotel had come out of our account. I panicked. My eyes widened. It was going to cost twice as much to go on the one holiday as both said they had a 'no cancellation' policy. My husband and I phoned and emailed the first hotel for four days but could not get through to anyone. We were giving up hope when eventually my husband managed to speak to a lovely woman who sorted the whole thing out and issued a refund and we both breathed a huge sigh of relief.

So, this year, I had one break in Bath with my older daughter, friend, plus her twin daughters. We saw the Roman baths, the girls got to relax in the thermal pools, we mooched around the shops, drank coffee in outside cafes and ate in restaurants, pretending we were abroad. We dined on Lebanse cuisine one evening, ate Italian another night and felt like we were in Greece after watching Mama Mia while enjoying humous and taramousalata and pitta.
